Who actually uses machine translation tools and for what? A look at the MT use of non-translators

25. August 2022 – 13:0014:30 CEST

More than 1 billion people use machine translation (MT) today. The great majority of these users are not professional translators but rather people who use raw MT for gisting: using raw MT to understand texts in other languages or communicate with people with whom they do not share a language. Because there is
little research about who, how, why, and in what contexts MT gisting is taking place, I chose it as the topic of my PhD thesis. This presentation is about what I found out in that thesis. I first describe the four different contexts I explored in the project. I then examine the ways in which context was found to contribute to how, and how well, people engaged with raw MT.

Speaker: Dr Mary Nurminen (Tampere University)

Mary Nurminen teaches translation (human and machine), interpreting and technical writing at Tampere University in Finland. Her 2021 PhD thesis explored contexts in which people consume raw machine translation and investigated what factors in those contexts influenced their use and reception of raw MT. Prior to moving to academia, Mary spent 13 years at Nokia and five years at Lionbridge. She worked in a variety of positions in the fields of technical communication and localization, including solution
architect, manager, and technical
writer.
